Imperfect competition with complements and substitutes

چکیده
I study price competition in settings where end products are combinations of components supplied by different monopolists, nesting standard models of perfect complements and imperfect substitutes. I show sufficient conditions for a discrete-choice demand system to yield demand for each product which is logconcave in price, and has log-increasing differences in own and another product’s price, leading to strong comparative statics results. Many results familiar from simple models, like the price effects of mergers or changes in marginal costs, extend naturally to this more complex setting. © 2014 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved. General Equilibrium Theories of Imperfect Competition
In a pure exchange economy, the authors propose a general equilibrium concept under imperfect competition, the ‘Cournotian monopolistic competition equilibrium,’ and compare it to the Cournot-Walras and the monopolistic competition concepts. The advantage of the proposed concept is to require less computational ability from the agents. The comparison is made first through a simple example, then...

The Incentives for Takeover in Oligopoly* by Roman Inderst and Christian Wey This paper presents a model of takeover incentives in an oligopolistic industry, which, in contrast to previous approaches, takes both insiders' and outsiders' gains from an increase in industry concentration into account.
